Jodorowsky's 'The Holy Mountain' (1973) is a surrealist masterpiece, which follows its characters on a spiritual journey toward enlightenment. The film is riddled with symbolism and metaphor, and contains some of the most aesthetically original set designs and mises en scène ever put to film. Its one drawback in reaching perfection is the unnecessary killing of animals for the sake of art. Scores of animals were killed just so that they could become props for the film. This act of violence is incredibly incongruent with the spiritual message conveyed in the film to such an extent that one can't help but to think that Jodorowsky is still blinded by illusion and hasn't fully embraced the very message he preaches.
