Very intriguing.
I loved the mystical elements, the witchy main character, gradually understanding that she's an unreliable narrator and not being sure what's real and what's distorted by the narrator. Something was missing to make this hit really hard, but I definitely want to read more of her work.

I had a hard time with this one... There were some beautifully written passages, and it was mostly a reflection on our perception of "civilized people" and "barbarians" inherited from colonization. Lots about torture and humanity's capacity for dehumanizing others. But it just didn't really work for me, I honestly don't have much to say about it. Not sure I will read any other of Coetzee's novels.

Pretty good actually, I was surprised. The most interesting parts were about the feeling of being a stage actor. What it's like to prepare for a theater role, go out there every night for months and continue to give an energetic performance, and the toll it takes on you. I almost expected to be annoyed by the main character because he's of the "complaining white cis man" type, but Ethan Hawke always kept me just on the side of not getting tired of his self destruction and hatred. Not the greatest book of all time, but an interesting read.

Il s'intéresse beaucoup à la linguistique et la communication, donc autant dire c'est vraiment mon del. Stories of your life et la Tour de Babylone étaient les meilleures histoires selon moi. Il a des idées très intéressantes, c'est une autre approche de la science fiction moins orientée technologie et plus orienté relations humaines et humanité. Même si ça reste très conceptuelle (mais pareil j'aime ça). Après c'est une collection de récits donc il y en a certains qui marchent mieux que d'autres, mais globalement c'était très réussi.

Not as good as Garp *sniff sniff* but still a good read, especially with the current events concerning abortion. Irving never ceases to surprise me with his way of seeing the world and subtle POVs. For a white man in the 80s to have opinions that more than hold up, but are actually extremely relevant in 2022 is amazing. Plus the way he creates these little closed worlds and complex relationships between his characters is beautiful.

Pride & Prejudice but with socialism. So in that way it's a different type of British romantic classic, but still with all the same codes. The archetypes were pretty grating after having read so many of this kind of book (the morally inflexible protagonist, selfless to a fault, makes for a pretty boring main character; the proud love interest; the inability to express any emotion - the British stiff upper lip). All without the charm and cleverness of Jane Austen's dialogues and character building.. Too bad, but still I read it in 4 days so I would be lying if I said it wasn't enjoyable.

Wrapped up faster than I would expect. LOTR is always a fun read.

Une lecture plutôt stressante, mais j'ai pas voulu le poser. Pas un portrait très positif de la société américaine des années 80... Rappelle American Psycho mais sans le gore + en plus de la critique de Wall Street et l'aristocratie New Yorkaise il aborde les écarts et la corruption dans la politique, le système juridique et les media.

I think it's better to listen to the audiobook. Interesting format, but hard to get attached to the characters. An interesting take on the afterlife and denial in grief. I liked the theme of humans' surprising to evolve against all odds.

Really unexpected. The most fun book I've read this year, so subtly feminist for a book from 1925. About a woman's condition in society at the time and how she can manipulate her way through to get what she wants. This whole persona of the happy-go-lucky, dumb blonde Lorelei has created, that she keeps up even in her private diary, but you can so clearly see the intelligence and strategy that lies underneath.
