L’origine de leur nom de groupe diffère quelque peu selon les sources. La version légitimement reconnue est celle du clin d’œil au surnom de Paul Mc Cartney à ses débuts. McCartney utilisait le pseudonyme de “Paul Ramone” lors d’une tournée des Silver Beatles en Ecosse en 1960. Aussi étonnant que cela puisse paraître, aux côtés des New York Dolls et des Stooges, les Ramones citent également les Beatles en référence…

Au cours de la troisième étape de la tournée Joshua Tree qui couvrait l'Amérique du Nord en 1987, U2 a développé un ensemble intéressant d'alter ego, lorsqu'ils se sont produits en tant que groupe country et western connu sous le nom de The Dalton Brothers ou parfois simplement The Daltons. Ce groupe était composé de quatre musiciens apparemment « chevronnés » : Betty Dalton (Adam), Luke Dalton (Edge), Alton Dalton (Bono) et Duke Dalton (Larry).
